Introduction to motors for eVTOL electric-drive aircraft

1. Features and applications of eVTOL

eVTOL (electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft) is an aircraft that can take off and land vertically, usually powered by electricity, and does not require a traditional runway. The core technologies of eVTOL include multi-rotor, tilt-rotor and ducted fan technologies, which enable the aircraft to take off and land vertically in a short distance and can be flexibly operated in an urban environment.

The main technical features of eVTOL include:

· Electric drive: environmentally friendly, low noise, suitable for use in cities.

· Vertical take-off and landing: No runway is required, suitable for short-distance take-off and landing in cities and complex environments.

· Multi-rotor, tilt-rotor and ducted fan: Provide stable flight performance and good controllability.

Application scenarios include:

· Emergency rescue: Quickly arrive at the scene in disaster relief, provide medical first aid and material transportation.

· Logistics distribution: Efficient and fast cargo delivery service.

·‌Urban air travel‌: As a personal or public transportation tool, it can solve the problem of urban traffic congestion.

·‌Sightseeing and tourism‌: Provide a unique aerial sightseeing experience.

·‌Film and television photography: Perfect high-altitude visual effects.

eVTOL technology has made significant progress in recent years, and many companies are actively developing and testing eVTOL products. Although eVTOL technology is difficult to popularize in the short term, its market demand is very strong, and it is expected that the entire market demand will reach 20,000 units by 2030.

2. eVTOL motor

As the power heart of eVTOL, the motor plays a vital role in the take-off, landing, hovering, and cruising of the aircraft. It provides the necessary thrust for the aircraft to ensure the safety and stability of the flight. For example, during the take-off and landing phase, the motor needs to provide strong power so that the aircraft can take off vertically quickly; when hovering, the motor must accurately control the output power to maintain the stable position of the aircraft; during cruising, the motor needs to continuously output stable power to ensure the speed and direction of the aircraft.

The performance of the motor directly determines the performance of eVTOL in various flight states. If the motor fails or has insufficient performance, it may cause serious safety accidents such as unstable operation of the aircraft, spinning in the air, or even overturning. Therefore, the reliability and high performance of the motor are crucial to the safe flight of eVTOL.

At present, the eVTOL motor adopts direct drive, outer rotor and radial flux design.
