Characteristics of brushless motors for multi-rotor drones


In recent years, the drone industry has developed rapidly and has been widely used in personal consumption, agricultural and forestry plant protection, geographic surveying and mapping, environmental monitoring, power line inspection, film and television aerial photography and other fields. Drones have efficient flight capabilities and are safer, more stable and easier to control. The power system is the technical key to the efficient performance of drones, and the motor plays an extremely important role in it. As an important part of the drone power system, the brushless motor plays a decisive role in the flight performance of the aircraft in the entire drone industry chain.


Multi-rotor drones all use brushless motors, which use semiconductor switching devices to achieve electronic commutation. They have the advantages of high reliability, no commutation sparks, and low mechanical noise. They are generally used on slightly larger aircraft and have a large load capacity. Compared with fixed-wing drones, multi-rotor drones have higher stability and better controllability, and can be miniaturized, so they have a wider range of applications in various fields.


Brushless DC motor


The brushless DC motor (BLDC) is mainly composed of a magnetic pole rotor, a multi-stage coil winding stator and a Hall effect position sensor (optional). Developed on the basis of brushed DC motors, BLDC has the following advantages:


1. High reliability - 

Since BLDC has no mechanical parts such as brushes and commutators, BLDC is more reliable than brushed DC motors.


2. High efficiency - 

There are windings on the rotor of brushed DC motors, and more power is lost in the form of heat. Since BLDC does not need to use brushes and commutators to achieve commutation operations, energy loss and friction are reduced, and the efficiency of the motor is improved.


3. High power density - 

Since BLDC uses electronic commutation, higher motor speeds and greater power output can be achieved. In contrast, the speed and power of brushed DC motors are limited by brushes and commutators.


4. Low mechanical noise and low interference - 

Since BLDC has a simpler structure, there is no friction and noise of mechanical commutation devices, and it runs quietly and smoothly; and there is no electric spark generated by brushed DC motors when running, which reduces interference with remote control radio equipment.


5. High control accuracy - 

BLDC has more precise speed and position control capabilities, which can achieve higher control accuracy and response speed.


6. Longer service life - 

Since the brushes and peripheral accessories are easily worn when the motor runs at high speed, the service life of brushed DC motors is short, while the wear of BLDC is mainly concentrated on the bearings, which requires less maintenance and care.

It should be noted that the cost of BLDC is relatively high, and it also requires higher technical requirements in control system design and debugging.


In comparison, when using traditional motors, there will be brush wear. After using BLDC, the reliability of the equipment will be greatly improved. In addition, while maintaining the same power output, BLDC can be made smaller and lighter, which is particularly suitable for space-constrained applications. BLDC is also used in quad-rotor drones.
